Our Great Indoors

April-June 2020

It wasn’t until the summer of 2020 that our public lands became refuges for the population to get out of their homes and maintain social distancing. I certainly welcomed my first opportunity to get out and camp, hike, and photograph again after a 67-day lockdown.

However, during those first months of the lockdown before the public lands started opening up again, many photographers had to pivot to something different to occupy their time. Like many businesses, professional photographers—from portrait photographers to travel photographers to photography workshop leaders—saw their livelihoods evaporate overnight.

One travel photographer whom I followed (https://erinoutdoors.com/) challenged herself to create outdoor adventures from entirely within her apartment, using miniature figures, materials, and supplies available to her. She may have started this as a personal project, but her creative vision quickly went viral and sparked a global movement—Our Great Indoors.

I was inspired by this amazing creative idea. I purchased some miniature figures off Amazon (before they all sold out), scoured the house and garage for available supplies, and set off to create my own outdoor adventures right in my home. Here is the collection of scenes that I created, along with some behind-the-scenes shots.
